Tuesday, Easter Week Five brings the pain and sorrow to the foreground—with the prayer of the Psalmist and the indictments of any, who has not done as God asked, finishing with the Acts story of the first martyr in Stephen—someone, who had done what God had asked—and was murdered for it.

Sometimes, the Christian life has obstacles that hurt; challenges that overwhelm and results that injure our bodies. Again, the prosperity Gospel tends to gloss over this aspect, but Christ never did. He repeatedly reminded the apostles that if they rejected him, who was perfect, how much more would they reject his followers? Stephen preached the Gospel. He never disobeyed a law. They manufactured accusations and paid false accusers to say things under oath. He still argued a better argument—no lawyer could surpass his argument.

His face transfigured into a radiant glow, and he saw heaven opened and Jesus standing at God’s side. Continue reading
